Marcelo Saracchi has confirmed his hopes of a permanent return to Celtic ended because the club never made a formal offer. The Uruguayan left-back, a fan favourite during his 2022-23 loan spell, instead signed for Major League Soccer side Houston Dynamo on a contract running until 2029.

Saracchi stated that the push for a move back to Glasgow came almost entirely from himself and his agent. He felt there was not much intention from Celtic's end during negotiations, which he described as going on for a long time without progress. The 28-year-old admitted he tried everything possible to go back but concluded the interest from the club was minimal. He ultimately decided he did not want to be part of a team that did not actively want him.

Manager's interest wasn't enough

Manager Martin O'Neill had publicly expressed a desire to re-sign the defender, and a permanent deal worth around £1.5 million was reportedly within reach. Saracchi acknowledged O'Neill's keenness, but said that beyond the manager's words, the club itself did not initiate contact or present a concrete proposal. This lack of a formal offer from the club hierarchy is what ultimately ended the prospect of a return. Saracchi, deemed surplus to requirements at parent club Boca Juniors after his loan, therefore pursued his option in the United States.

He has now fully committed to Houston Dynamo, where his deal includes a club option to extend by a further two years. He briefly linked up with former Celtic defender Erik Sviatchenko there before the Dane's subsequent move to Thailand. Despite the disappointment, Saracchi posted a heartfelt letter to Celtic fans and says he still follows the club's results from afar. He insists the story between him and Celtic is not finished and he would like to play for the club again one day.

Celtic's focus is now on maintaining their strong early-season form, which sees them top of the Premiership with 18 points from seven games. They lead the table by two points despite a recent 1-0 defeat to Rangers. The squad prepares for their next challenge, an away fixture against ninth-placed Motherwell on October 11. Fans can track the team's progress and upcoming schedule on the club's fixtures and standings pages.
