Celtic's decision on Martin O'Neill does not appear to have impacted long-term plans at Celtic Park. The controversial appointment of Robbie Keane could still be made by Celtic in the future, according to reports. Keane - who spent six months on loan in Glasgow from Tottenham in 2010 - emerged as the frontrunner to take over from Martin O'Neill earlier this week after holding talks with the Scottish champions. However, after lifting the Premiership and Scottish Cup last term, veteran gaffer O'Neill held talks with Dermot Desmond to become permanent Celtic boss for a second time by signing a one-year contract. It is now claimed, though, that Keane could still land the gig in the future - despite a furious backlash from Parkhead supporters due to his controversial time managing in Israel, where he led Maccabi Tel Aviv to their title in the 2023/24 season. The Irish Independent claim the Irishman was 'aware' O'Neill had first refusal on the job after his double success last term, but there is a 'strong chance' he could become Celtic boss down the line. Club chiefs had planned for O'Neill to step into an advisory role with Keane becoming the main man in the dugout. However, the call from the 74-year-old to remain has kiboshed that set-up - and Keane is said to be 'relaxed' over the deal falling apart, the report adding that it was 'no surprise' O'Neill wanted to stay. It is claimed that the anger from fan groups 'were categorically not the reason why he ultimately failed to land the role at Parkhead.' Keane is said to be 'open' to other management offers this summer, and featured in a Liverpool legends clash with Barcelona in South Korea last weekend.
