Celtic defender Cameron Carter-Vickers is back in action with the Bhoys after a devastating Achilles rupture dashed his 2026 World Cup hopes. The USMNT star suffered the injury in October 2025, missing the club’s domestic double under Martin O’Neill.
What happened to Carter-Vickers?
The 27-year-old’s season ended in agony when he first felt cramp in his calf during a match. Physios confirmed a full Achilles rupture, a blow that forced him to watch from the stands as Celtic claimed the Premiership and Scottish Cup. Carter-Vickers arrived at Celtic in 2022 after multiple loans from Tottenham, and has since racked up 172 appearances and eight goals.
Speaking exclusively to CelticPlayer, he admitted the frustration of missing a campaign where the club fought every inch. “Being out was tough, especially a season like last season where it was a battle for us,” he said. “At first I thought it was just cramp. Then the physios said it was a rupture. You know straight away it’s long-term.”
How did the recovery go?
Carter-Vickers spent three weeks in a cast, followed by eight in a boot. Movement was impossible at first. He focused on tiny wins-getting his foot to bend again, then the next milestone. “It was all about chasing the small gains and being happy with them,” he explained. “You can’t get ahead of yourself.”
The patience paid off. He rejoined the squad for light training late in the previous campaign, but the step up to full pre-season intensity in Dublin has been the real test. “I just want to get back to playing football,” he said. “You can do fitness work alone, but it’s not the same as being out there.”
Why Carter-Vickers’ return matters for Celtic
Celtic lean heavily on the American’s composure at the back. His absence left a void during a tight title race. Now fit again, he can add steel to a spine that already includes Callum McGregor and Kyogo Furuhashi.
His first competitive outing comes against Shelbourne in the League of Ireland on July 26. A trip to Portugal for warm-weather training follows, as Celtic sharpen their squad for the Premiership opener.
What’s next for the Hoops?
The pre-season clash in Dublin was a start, but the real test comes against Shelbourne. Carter-Vickers’ fitness will be under the microscope. If he hits the ground running, Martin O’Neill’s side can start the new campaign with a fully fit defensive leader.
The USMNT man’s journey back from the brink shows the club’s medical team at their best. For a player who has given 172 games already, every minute back on the pitch is a bonus.
