Interim manager Martin O'Neill has addressed Paulo Bernardo's recent absence from Celtic's matchday squads, describing the midfielder's situation as 'really unfortunate'. Bernardo has been notably missing from the last five fixtures, leading to questions about his role at the club.
Paulo Bernardo, a 24-year-old former Portugal under-21s captain, joined Celtic from Benfica almost three years ago, initially on loan before making the move permanent in 2024. Despite showing early promise in the green-and-white hoops, he has struggled to secure a regular starting spot, making only 11 appearances and three starts across O'Neill's tenures this season.
O'Neill pinpointed Bernardo's optimal role as a No. 6, a defensive midfield position. However, this crucial role sees significant competition within the Celtic squad from captain Callum McGregor and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, which has limited Bernardo's opportunities to play in his preferred position.
The interim manager acknowledged Bernardo's strong performance in a European game earlier in the season, reiterating that his lack of game time is due to misfortune rather than a lack of ability. O'Neill drew parallels with summer signing Michel-Ange Balikwisha, who has also seen limited starts for the club.
Looking ahead, O'Neill suggested that a change in management could benefit players like Bernardo and Balikwisha. He commented, "If I'm not here, those lads could end up starring for a new manager," implying a potential fresh start for the talented midfielder under a different tactical approach at Celtic.
