Celtic Seal Deal for Hassan, but Gineitis Talks Stall
Celtic are set to seal the deal for Egyptian winger Haissem Hassan, but face a challenge in landing Torino's Gvidas Gineitis, who has attracted interest from Red Bull Salzburg.
What Happened?
Hassan is heading to the UK to complete his medical ahead of a four-year deal in a move worth up to £9m. The Scottish champions have thrashed out terms with Real Oviedo to snap up the Egypt World Cup star for an initial fee of under £6m, with another £3m in add-ons, including a bumper kickback if the Parkhead side reach the Champions League.
Why it Matters for Celtic
The Scottish champions are in the hunt for several targets and are hoping to add at least one more signing on top of Hassan before next week's Euro first-leg showdown with LASK. Personal terms with Paderborn playmaker Mika Buar have already been agreed, but the Bundesliga outfit are determined to keep hold of the 24-year-old.
What Comes Next?
Celtic are similarly battling to retain Arne Engels until at least beyond the play-off clash with West Ham, who have backed off after falling short of the £25m asking price. The Belgian is understood to be keen on a move having been blocked from signing for Nottingham Forest in January, but is not forcing the issue having held talks with Shaun Maloney at the weekend where he assured the assistant manager he was determined to continue performing for the Parkhead side despite the transfer talk.
League Standing: 1st in Premiership, 6 pts, 2W-0D-0L from 2 games, recent form WW.
Celtic would prefer to hang on until after the LASK encounters, with defender Alistair Johnston in a similar position. The Canadian was withdrawn at half-time in Sunday's 5-1 hammering of Kilmarnock after suffering a knock, and he is continuing to be assessed ahead of Saturday's Premier Sports Cup clash with Dundee United at Tannadice.
Goals This Season: 6 scored, 1 conceded (+5 goal difference).
The Parkhead side have until Thursday night to register their squad for the LASK clash, but can add another two new players up until the eve of the encounter.
Next Fixture: vs Motherwell (at home, 2026-12-26) (3rd in the table).
Celtic don't want to be weakened for the Champions League crunch encounter, but will have Hassan on board if the medical goes without any hitches.
