Outgoing Celtic goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel has addressed fan criticism and confirmed his injury-forced departure from Parkhead. The Dane, whose contract expires this month, spoke to Celtic TV on May 1, 2026, about his challenging final season and significant health issues.
Schmeichel admitted he "feeds off the energy" of criticism, despite being a target for fan frustration this term. A series of high-profile errors and disappointing displays led to sections of the Celtic fan base booing the goalkeeper throughout the campaign.
The Parkhead No. 1 revealed a severe injury status, including a torn bicep, torn rotator cuff, dislocated shoulder, and torn labrum. He has already undergone an exploratory and clean-up surgery, but anticipates needing "another one or two, maybe three surgeries" due to extensive damage and infection.
Turning 40 later this year, Schmeichel conceded that these injuries might mean he has played his last professional game. His prolonged absence saw Viljami Sinisalo step up to become Martin O'Neill's first-choice goalkeeper for the club.
Despite making appearances at Lennoxtown, the Dane is set to leave Glasgow's east end when his contract officially expires. His message to the "boo boys" and candid injury update mark the end of his tenure at Celtic Park.
