Celtic's perfect start to the domestic campaign is over after a 3-0 Premier Sports Cup quarter-final defeat at Ibrox. Rangers advanced to the semi-finals with two goals from Dan Neil and a first strike for the club from Kevin Kelsy.

Referee Nick Walsh oversaw the match, which was played under fan restrictions with only home supporters present. The result ends Celtic's run of six consecutive wins in Scottish competition this term. Martin O'Neill's side remain top of the Premiership with 18 points from six games, five points clear of their city rivals.

McInnes masterclass

Rangers manager Derek McInnes made significant tactical adjustments, switching to a 3-5-2 formation that Celtic struggled to contain. James Penrice operated in midfield at times, adding an extra layer of pressure. Celtic's midfield lacked balance and a clear plan when out of possession, a structural issue previously exposed in the Champions League qualifier against LASK Linz.

Dan Neil, wearing the captain's armband in the absence of the injured Lawrence Shankland, opened the scoring in the 23rd minute after being set up by Kelsy. The same combination worked in reverse for the second goal, with Kelsy finding the net on 59 minutes for his first Rangers goal since his substantial summer move. Neil sealed the victory with his second of the night 15 minutes from time.

Celtic's summer signings struggle

Few of Celtic's new arrivals made a positive impact. Haissem Hassan, introduced at half-time for Sam Johnstone, was perhaps the only one to pass muster, having provided the assist for Mika Baur's winner against St Johnstone last week. The team's overall performance raised questions about the integration of the summer signings.

Neil spoke to Premier Sports after the final whistle. "Brilliant. It was a great team performance," the Rangers midfielder said. "We fully deserved the victory out there." He added praise for his teammate, stating, "I don't score many goals. I thought the big man [Kevin Kelsy] was excellent today."

The match saw several substitutions and a booking for Hassan. Naderi also required treatment for an ankle issue during the contest. Rangers will now face Aberdeen in the semi-finals, while Hearts meet Hibernian in the other tie.

For Celtic, the focus immediately returns to league duty where they hold a commanding position. The squad will also hope for positive news on the injury front, with Alistair Johnston, Callum Osmand and Jota currently sidelined.
