Celtic delivered a statement of intent with a 7-1 demolition of Hearts at Parkhead on Sunday. The victory sent Martin O’Neill’s side four points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership table, having taken 21 points from their opening eight games. This result on 18 October solidifies their league standing of first place with a record of seven wins and one loss from eight games, putting them one point clear of Rangers.
The home side were rampant from the first whistle. Kieran Tierney headed in the opener after just seven minutes, connecting with a Liam Scales flick-on from a Mika Baur corner. Benjamin Nygren added a second three minutes later, his deflected volley finding the net after another Baur delivery.
Callum Osmand, making his first start for the club, then took centre stage. He capitalised on a poor pass from Hearts midfielder Sabri Guendouz to slot home his first in the 36th minute. Just two minutes later, Osmand headed in his second after Camilo Duran’s initial effort was saved by goalkeeper Beau Reus.
Hearts pulled a goal back before the break through a smart Laurent Mendy finish, but Celtic’s relentless pressure continued. The first half scoring was completed in stoppage time when a Mika Baur cross was turned into his own net by Hearts defender Jamie McCart.
Camilo Duran made it six shortly after the restart, curling home a fine effort, and Benjamin Nygren completed the scoring with his second of the afternoon late on. The result leaves Celtic in a commanding position at the summit of the standings. This emphatic win, which featured goals from Tierney, Nygren, Osmand, and Duran, provides a stark contrast to their recent form of two wins and three losses from their last five matches across all competitions, which included a 4-1 defeat to Benfica on 15 October.
Martin O’Neill told reporters after the match that his team’s performance was excellent from start to finish. He said the early goals set the tone and praised the clinical nature of his attacking players. "We were ruthless today," O’Neill said.
Benjamin Nygren, who spoke to Sky Sports, said the team felt confident and wanted to make a point after their recent European defeat. Nygren stated.
Callum Osmand described his debut start as a dream and credited his teammates for creating the chances. Osmand said.
Hearts manager, whose side have now lost three of their last four league matches, was critical of his team’s defensive display.
The win extends Celtic’s perfect domestic record this season to seven wins from eight matches. Their next fixture is a trip to face Hibernian, who are twelfth in the table, at Easter Road on Sunday 25 October. Top scorer Camilo Duran, who now has four goals this season from eight appearances, will be looking to add to his tally in that match. With 16 goals scored and only four conceded in the league, Celtic's goal difference of plus twelve shows their dominance so far this campaign.
