Celtic’s captain is plotting his future at Parkhead, not plotting a move east. Callum McGregor’s recent change of agent is a negotiating tactic ahead of his final contract talks with the Hoops, according to former Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness - who insists the 33-year-old Scotland international has no desire to leave Celtic this summer.

Celtic sit third in the Premiership on 67 points from 33 games, three adrift of Hearts, after a 4-1 loss to Sporting CP on 14 July 2026. McGregor started 36 of those league games and has 12 full senior seasons under his belt at Celtic Park.

What did the agent switch signal?

Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, told the Inside Track podcast that McGregor’s agent move is “more about negotiating how he’s going to be staying longer term” than any exit plan. The Scotland skipper remains under contract until summer 2028 and has held talks with Martin O’Neill over his future.

“He’s got a new agent because he wants to negotiate the last contract he’s going to have with Celtic,” Wyness said. “I actually see it as the opposite of him thinking about leaving the club. I think it’s more about negotiating how he’s going to be staying on after his playing career.”

Why Wyness warns against a Saudi move

The ex-Aberdeen CEO believes a move to Saudi Arabia would “tarnish” McGregor’s legacy and urged him to see out his career with the Bhoys. He argued that Celtic can still craft a “really good last contract” to keep McGregor involved beyond playing.

“He is the right type of guy to stay on with Celtic and contribute for a long time,” Wyness added. “So I don’t think there’s any real desire (to leave). While they may threaten, I think that’s just a negotiating tactic.”

Celtic ready to cash in on Kenny

Elsewhere at Celtic, the club is open to offers for young striker Johnny Kenny this summer after he spent the second half of the season out on loan. Martin O’Neill shipped Kenny out in January and sources say the 20-year-old will struggle to force his way back into the first team under the new boss. A move to the English Championship is the most likely outcome.

Celtic have now shipped 35 goals this season and sit three points behind Hearts with a recent run of four wins and one loss in their last five games.
