Former Celtic striker Adam Idah scored his first Republic of Ireland goal in more than a year during a 3-0 Nations League victory over Israel on Sunday night. The match was overshadowed by an allegation of racist chanting directed at Idah, which UEFA has confirmed cannot be investigated because the correct protocols were not followed.

Idah, who moved from Celtic to Swansea City last summer, netted Ireland’s second goal in the 66th minute of the win. The forward has started the season strongly with his new club, scoring three goals and providing one assist in six EFL Championship appearances. His international strike was his first since September 2025.

Controversy over alleged racism

The fixture was marred by claims of racist monkey chants aimed at Idah from sections of the Israeli support. Ireland midfielder Jayson Molumby attempted to alert German referee Harm Osmers and fourth official Florian Exner to the noise before half-time, pointing to his ears and asking them to 'listen'. However, Molumby did not formally report a racial incident, and neither official heard the alleged chanting themselves.

A Football Association of Ireland delegation was later informed that UEFA could not open an investigation due to the incorrect on-field procedure. UEFA stated the anti-racism protocol was not activated. Further alleged chanting occurred in the second half when defender James Abankwah sent a shot wide.

Bazunu's principled withdrawal

Ireland goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu withdrew from the squad ahead of the match on a point of principle. Bazunu, who plays for Bolton Wanderers, stated his decision was a matter of 'character and principle'.

"My decision is based purely upon my personal belief that the killing of innocent people is wrong," Gavin Bazunu said. The goalkeeper added that representing his country meant everything to him and that his stance was not against the Israeli people or the Jewish community.

The Republic of Ireland squad held an emergency meeting and voted by a significant majority to play the fixture. Troy Parrott opened the scoring for Ireland before Idah's goal sealed the comfortable win.

Idah's form comes as his former club Celtic lead the Premiership, sitting first with 18 points from seven games. The champions have a two-point lead over Rangers but are looking to bounce back from three consecutive defeats in all competitions. Their next fixture is a trip to face Motherwell on 11 October.
